Hearing loss on my right ear after shower and cleaning with cotton buds. Was very worried and saw Dr Wei Cen for the first time. Experience was very pleasant, good and reassuring. From the reception to the Doctor, it was all friendly and professional! Everyone knows what they were doing and in next to no time I was in the treatment room having my hearing treated. The procedure was quick, zero discomfort and every steps explained in detail so that I could understand clearly what needs and will be done. Doctor Wei Cen was really good and I was out within 30 minutes! All problems resolved and surprisingly the costs was really affordable and fair. Would strongly recommend to everyone with hearing issues. Thanks Dr Wei Cen!

Wei Cin was very thorough in his testing of my hearing. He also gave me helpful tips on living with tinnitus. He recommended aids which I have and I find they seem to override the noise of the tinnitus. I’m very glad I made the effort to go all the way to Canterbury from Oak Park. Wei Cin was excellent and I look forward to ongoing monitoring.

I recently had a professional ear wax removal at NeuroHearing and couldn't be happier with the experience. From the moment I arrived, Weicen was prompt, friendly, and completely professional. I was impressed with how thoroughly Weicen explained everything — walking me through the procedure step by step, outlining the three wax removal options available, and clearly explaining why he recommended the approach he did. Highly recommend.

Introduction
Hearing loss affects more than just the person experiencing it—it impacts their relationships, interactions, and overall quality of life. For families in suburbs like Balwyn, Hawthorn, and Camberwell, understanding how to support a loved one with hearing loss can make a world of difference. At NeuroHearing, we believe in empowering families to work together to improve hearing health and maintain strong, meaningful connections.

In this blog, we’ll share practical tips to help you support a loved one with hearing loss, strengthen communication, and encourage them to seek help.

1. Recognize the Signs of Hearing Loss

Many people with hearing loss are unaware of the extent of their condition. Common signs to look out for include:

  • Frequently asking people to repeat themselves
  • Difficulty hearing in noisy environments, like busy cafes in South Yarra or gatherings in Brighton
  • Turning up the TV volume louder than usual
  • Withdrawal from conversations or social events

By recognizing these signs early, you can start a supportive conversation and help them take the first step toward addressing their hearing health.

2. Approach the Conversation with Care

Bringing up hearing loss can be a sensitive topic, especially if your loved one feels self-conscious or defensive. Here’s how to approach it with care:

  • Choose the Right Moment: Find a quiet, relaxed setting, such as a family dinner in Prahran or a peaceful walk in Kew, where they’ll feel comfortable.
  • Express Empathy: Use “I” statements like, “I’ve noticed you’ve been having trouble hearing me lately, and I want to make sure you’re okay.”
  • Avoid Blame: Focus on the benefits of seeking help rather than pointing out their difficulties.

A compassionate approach can open the door to productive discussions about hearing care.

3. Make Everyday Communication Easier

Small changes can significantly improve communication with a loved one who has hearing loss:

  • Speak Clearly and Face Them: Ensure you’re in their line of sight so they can read your facial expressions.
  • Reduce Background Noise: Turn off the TV or move to a quieter spot when having a conversation.
  • Be Patient: Give them extra time to process and respond without interrupting or speaking too quickly.

These strategies can reduce frustration and help both of you feel more connected, whether you’re at home in Burwood or out enjoying a day in Elwood.

4. Encourage Professional Help

While adjustments can help, professional audiology services are the key to addressing hearing loss effectively. Encourage your loved one to schedule a hearing test, emphasizing the benefits of early intervention:

  • Improved Quality of Life: Modern hearing aids can restore confidence and ease communication.
  • Cognitive Health: Addressing hearing loss early can reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
  • Social Connections: Clear hearing fosters stronger relationships and more meaningful interactions.

At NeuroHearing, we offer in-home hearing tests for residents across suburbs like Mont Albert, Malvern, and Vermont South, making it easier for your loved one to take that important first step.

5. Be Their Advocate

Navigating hearing loss can feel overwhelming. By offering to help with tasks like booking an appointment, researching hearing aids, or attending their audiology consultation, you can show them they’re not alone.

For example, if you live in Ashburton or Oakleigh, accompany your loved one during their first hearing test to provide emotional support and help them understand the results. Your involvement can make a significant difference in their willingness to take action.

6. Create a Supportive Environment

A supportive environment goes beyond communication—it’s about fostering a positive attitude toward hearing health. Celebrate their progress, whether it’s using new hearing aids or joining social activities again.

Residents in vibrant communities like Highett or Chadstone can benefit from encouragement to participate in local events or reconnect with friends, knowing they have your support every step of the way.

Conclusion: Take the First Step Together

Supporting a loved one with hearing loss is about more than helping them hear—it’s about preserving their confidence, relationships, and quality of life. By recognizing the signs, communicating with empathy, and encouraging professional help, you can make a meaningful difference for your loved one and your family.
